Just when you thought the opioid epidemic couldn’t get any worse
The opioid epidemic has caused thousands of deaths, and it doesn’t seem to be slowing down. And now, the news keeps getting worse.
According to an article by Politifact, lawsuits against prescription drug manufacturers and distributors has kept the players accountable for over marketing and over prescribing prescription opioids, which means that these companies are reducing the amount of painkillers they produce.
This means that the shift to illegal street opioids is now becoming even more problematic, as heroin and China-smuggled Fentanyl cause a rampage across the country.
Yes. It is good that we are holding those responsible accountable. Yes. It is good that we are recognizing that we have a major problem. But I think that we are still lacking in one important area, and that is the treatment of the people that are addicted. It will not matter if we reduce the drug supply. As long as the demand is out there, someone will continue to provide, and that is a scary thought when that someone becomes an entity that hides in the shadows and from the law.
We need to have a patient-first mentality and stop seeing drug addicts as criminals, but as victims of a system that is utterly failing them. Whether we will ever understand this or not, I have no idea.
What can be done to fix this?
